The Design Process |
How a Custom Garment is Created |
The process for creating a custom garment is complex and takes some time. It is extremely important to begin at least six weeks in advance of your event. However, the process is exciting and enjoyable, and we do our best to minimize inconvenience to you. We are pleased to come to your home or office for all meetings and fittings. |
Initial consultation. You and the designer will meet to talk about the event for which the garment is required and your ideas and preferences. You and the designer together will analyze your figure and discuss how to create a flattering and comfortable garment. The designer will make suggestions about fabric and may do some initial sketches during this meeting. There is usually no charge for this consultation. |
Design meeting. After the designer has had a chance to work up more sketches based on your conversation, you will meet to go over the sketches, make fabric choices, and finalize the design parameters for your garment. This is when you will really begin to visualize the garment. At this time we will also take your measurements. |
Muslin fittings. We will create a prototype of your garment (a "muslin") in a plain fabric that approximates the weight and drape of your final fabric choice. At the muslin fitting, you and the designer will analyze the lines and fit of the garment and agree on any changes you feel are appropriate. There may be more than one muslin fitting. Your final garment will not be cut until you and the designer are both satisfied with the muslin. |
Garment fittings. Depending on the complexity of the garment, there will be between one and five fittings as the garment is completed. This will ensure that the final garment fits you perfectly and that there will be no surprises. These fittings are usually fun and exciting as you watch your special garment take shape. |
Your completed garment will be pressed and delivered to you well in advance of your event. |
