About Virginia McConnell and Silken Moon |
Virginia McConnell is a fiber artist and designer in Richmond, Virginia. Designing is a second career for Virginia. After obtaining both an undergraduate degree and a law degree from University of Richmond, she enjoyed a career in historic preservation, but returned to school to obtain a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2007. In both 2007 and 2008, Virginia was a finalist in the Passion for Fashion competition, a Project Runway style competition where twelve designers are given a limited amount of time to complete a design and sewing challenge. Virginia's garment from the 2007 competition was featured on the poster for the 2008 show. Virginia was also a finalist in a competition sponsored by Threads magazine in 2007. Virginia's collection debuted on the runway at the 2009 Virginia Fashion Week in Virginia Beach . . . . . . |
STOP! (All true, but how boring!) |
Here's the real scoop: |
I make things. I can't help it. For as long as I can remember, I've been coloring, drawing, sewing, knitting, crocheting, decorating, embellishing, cutting, and assembling things. Fabric is my muse. I love the colors, the textures, the way it drapes. I love all the things I can do with it. I think it is fascinating that fabric is both a 3-dimensional medium that can be cut and shaped into something practical, glamorous, or both, and also a 2-dimensional medium that can be used for the pure joy of expression. I don't think I will ever get tired of working in fabric. But if I do, I will probably just make things from something else. I told you, I can't help it. |

Silken Moon is a work in progress. It started out as a custom design house providing special-occasion garments for individual clients. Somewhere along the way it morphed into something more playful. Silken Moon doesn't fit neatly into any one category, and it's still evolving. One thing I know for sure: I am not interested in being ordinary, and I am not willing to stand in one place for very long. |
